Aurecon projects win Energy Efficiency Awards

2 June 2009

Two Aurecon projects won awards at the 2009 EECA Excellence in energy efficiency and renewable energy awards on 21 May 2009 in Auckland, New Zealand.  Aurecon’s Wellington-based process engineering team were involved with both projects which were nominated for the awards by their owner Energy For Industry.  The award winning projects were:

Silver Fern Farms
This fluidised bed boiler project won the Innovation Award and was highly commended in the Renewables section.

This boiler burns dewatered meatworks effluent sludge and woodwaste producing approximately half of the site's steam requirement and displaces coal as a fuel for steam production. It also means that the effluent sludge does not need to be disposed of by composting and landfilling. Aurecon acted as technical consultants and contract administrator advisors on this project.

     Winstone Pulp International

Winstone Pulp International
This heat recovery project won the Large Business category and was highly commended in the Innovation section.

This project recovered heat from dirty LP steam generated from the pulp mill refiners to heat flash drier air and reduce the quantity of LPG burnt on the site. The mill is expecting to save over NZ$2 million a year in fuel costs and to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 6,000 tonne per year. Aurecon was responsible for the engineering of this project.

These projects represent a growing industry trend towards innovating and creating sustainable solutions within the industrial sector
